Glass Processing at glasmetall Temmel: From a New Centerpiece to a Powerful Duo

With a second systron system, glasmetall Temmel is expanding its glass processing capabilities. Since February 2026, a systron proMD with integrated waterjet, combined with a systron WM washing and drying station, has complemented the existing systron proHD line. The family-owned company in southern Styria, Austria, has thus created additional capacity and flexibility for demanding glass projects.

In 2021, glasmetall Günter Temmel invested in a systron proHD glass processing center, making it the new centerpiece of its in-house glass processing operations. Five years later, that centerpiece has evolved into a powerful duo. The additional systron proMD enables the company to handle larger projects alongside its day-to-day production and distribute orders between the two systems according to glass size, geometry and the required processing steps.

Precision Glass Processing as an Important Part of In-House Value Creation

Today, glasmetall Temmel employs 38 people. In recent years, the company has continuously expanded its in-house glass processing capabilities, with the production of laminated safety glass (LSG) becoming an important area.

Precision and repeatability are particularly important when processing laminated glass. The systron systems enable the individual glass panes to be processed accurately and with matching geometries.

„Our customers have become accustomed to this level of quality. If something is processed differently, we immediately receive questions“,

says Managing Director Thomas Temmel. For him, a high level of in-house production is an important factor in the company’s market positioning:

“You have to be faster and deliver better quality. That is exactly how we are trying to establish ourselves in the market.”

Five Years of Experience with the systron proHD

The investment in the systron proHD in 2021 marked an important step in the development of the company’s in-house glass processing. Different processing steps could be combined on a single system, while reducing manual handling.

„In terms of quality, we would no longer be able to manufacture many of our current products efficiently without a system like this,” Temmel explains.

The advantages of combined processing are particularly evident with complex glass geometries, including:

  • custom shapes and parallelograms
  • drilling and countersinking
  • cut-outs
  • complex contours
  • individually processed laminated glass panes

At the same time, glasmetall Temmel’s project business has grown. Projects with a high proportion of in-house value creation are particularly important, including custom-shaped laminated glass with extensive processing or digital printing. Its own glass processing capabilities provide the flexibility and manufacturing depth required for these projects.

More Glass Processing Capacity for Project Business

As utilization increased, additional glass processing capacity became necessary. In particular, larger projects needed to be handled efficiently without disrupting ongoing day-to-day production.

“If you move into project business, you have to be able to handle it alongside your normal day-to-day production,” Temmel explains.

The company therefore chose a systron proMD waterjet glass processing center with a washing and drying station. With two systems, glasmetall Temmel can distribute orders according to geometry, processing requirements and current machine utilization. In addition to increasing capacity, the second system provides greater flexibility in production planning and increases production reliability.

Before making the investment, Thomas and Günter Temmel also compared other solutions available on the market. Ultimately, their experience from five years of working with systron was a decisive factor.

“With an investment of this size, I want to know what I am getting. With systron, we already knew the quality and the support. That gives us confidence,” Thomas Temmel says, describing the decision-making process.

systron proMD with Waterjet Takes on a Central Role

Since February 2026, the systron proMD Milling, Drilling & Waterjet Centre for glass sizes up to 3.5 × 2.5 m has been in operation and is now firmly integrated into daily production.

“The proMD has actually become our main machine,” says Temmel.

The processing strategy is selected according to the requirements of each order. For production runs involving many identical holes, conventional tool-based processing with drills and milling tools can be the appropriate solution. For varying diameters, complex cut-outs and individual contours, the integrated waterjet provides additional flexibility.

For glasmetall Temmel, this flexibility has quickly proven its value in daily production.

“Once you have the waterjet in production, you really cannot imagine working without it.”

The waterjet enables different contours to be cut without requiring a corresponding tool for every diameter. This makes it possible to process individual and geometrically demanding shapes with a high degree of flexibility.

Ready for the Next Steps

glasmetall Temmel is already considering the next stages in the development of its production. The systron proMD was positioned so that the system can potentially be expanded with glass storage and robot loading in the future.

At the same time, the company is investing in its own energy supply. Photovoltaic modules installed on the roof and facade areas provide approximately 700 kW of capacity and cover around one third of the company’s energy requirements during operating hours.
